A Amazon Web Services Case Study
Loyalty New Zealand operates Fly Buys, New Zealand’s largest rewards program with more than 2.4 million members and over NZ$11 billion in annual retail spend across 55 merchants. Faced with two-decade-old proprietary systems built for batch processing and slow, outsourced infrastructure provisioning (sometimes up to three months), the company needed a customer-centric platform supporting multi-account/multi-member/token models and real‑time merchant integrations, so it launched a multiyear core technology refresh.
As a greenfield build on AWS, Loyalty New Zealand created LoyaltyCloud using EC2 (Docker), Amazon S3, Amazon RDS, Route 53, open APIs, and CI/CD-driven DevOps, plus a tokenization strategy for privacy. The move cut provisioning time from months to under 15 minutes, sped merchant onboarding, enabled real‑time integrations, and positioned the business to scale from millions toward 100 million annual transactions while improving agility and operational resilience.
