Librato - Customer Case Study

Librato, a SolarWinds company, provides a real‑time, cloud‑hosted monitoring platform that relies on Apache Cassandra to store all customer metrics. Facing growing demand, the team needed better Cassandra performance, faster database recovery, and greater agility and scalability while simplifying operations.

Librato moved its Cassandra workload from 160 I2 instances to 96 C4 instances using Amazon EBS (gp2 for data partitions and st1 for commit logs), gaining a higher CPU‑to‑disk ratio and tailored storage for different access patterns. The change cut write latency by up to 500 ms, sped customer API data access, reduced recovery time from hours to minutes, and lowered operational costs by about 35%, while improving scalability and simplifying upgrades.
