Lessons Learned from Migrating Mission-Critical Academic and Administrative Systems to the Cloud

Idaho State University (ISU) needed to replace aging on-premises infrastructure for its mission-critical Moodle learning management system, which supports teaching and learning for 13,000 unique student users and 96% of courses. Instead of refreshing local hardware, ISU chose Amazon Web Services to move Moodle to the cloud and support student and administrative services more reliably.

Amazon Web Services helped ISU migrate Moodle to Amazon EC2, with supporting services including Amazon Aurora, AWS Lambda, Amazon CloudWatch, Amazon SNS, Amazon Route 53, IAM, and CloudTrail. The result was lower IT support costs, improved redundancy and reliability, faster scaling for web demand, and a much stronger disaster recovery position, with ISU reporting a “quantum leap forward” in resilience.
