A Amazon Web Services Case Study
Knewton, an adaptive learning company, needed a reliable, scalable cloud infrastructure to support rapidly growing student usage, especially during peak periods like back-to-school season. Running on Amazon Web Services (AWS), Knewton sought to keep costs low while powering personalized learning products used by millions of students and partners around the world.
Amazon Web Services implemented services including Amazon EMR, Amazon EC2, Amazon S3, Elastic Load Balancing, and AWS CloudFormation to help Knewton analyze large data sets, provision infrastructure at scale, and manage traffic spikes. As a result, Knewton scaled to more than 1,000 EC2 instances, cut its monthly bill almost in half by moving about 80% of instances to Reserved Instances, and gained the flexibility to prototype and test new systems confidently while expanding globally.
