Kit Check - Customer Case Study

Kit Check provides automated drug‑tracking solutions for hospital pharmacies, using RFID readers and cloud services to inventory kits of up to 150 medications. The system cuts manual processing from 30 minutes to 3 minutes, helping large hospitals save roughly $180,000 a year. As a bootstrapped startup aiming to get product to market quickly, Kit Check needed to avoid IT complexity and high personnel costs (including an expensive in‑house DBA) while meeting HIPAA and regulatory requirements.

Kit Check launched on Amazon EC2 and Amazon RDS and gradually added AWS services as it scaled to more than 200 hospitals and tracked over 6 million tagged drugs. Using Amazon RDS eliminated the need to hire a DBA (avoiding an annual $175,000+ salary), supported HIPAA‑compliant conversations with large customers, and gave the small DevOps team the infrastructure to grow the business (now over 80 staff and $20M in venture funding) at low cost.
