ITV Saves $150,000 in Compute Costs by Using Amazon EKS on Amazon EC2 Spot Instances

ITV, the UK media company, needed a better way to handle sudden spikes in viewership without overprovisioning compute or spending heavily on Amazon EC2. Working with Amazon Web Services, ITV used Amazon EKS to run containerized microservices and improve scaling, while also exploring Amazon EC2 Spot Instances to reduce infrastructure costs.

Amazon Web Services helped ITV implement Spot Fleets for Amazon EKS and automate scaling across instance types and Availability Zones, so workloads could shift safely between Spot and On-Demand capacity. The results were significant: ITV cut compute costs by up to 60%, saved $150,000 on its EC2 bill in one year, increased Spot usage to 24% of compute, reduced deployment times from 40 minutes to as little as 4 minutes, and grew hosted microservices by about 30% in a year.
