A Amazon Web Services Case Study
The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) is a nonprofit founded in 1960 that develops stress‑tolerant rice varieties and supports more than 1,000 staff across 17 rice‑growing countries as a member of the CGIAR consortium. IRRI and partner organizations faced fragmented, on‑premises ERP systems that prevented a single view of operations, limited collaboration, and required a flexible, globally accessible infrastructure to reduce costs and speed development.
IRRI and CGIAR partners migrated to a shared ERP on Amazon Web Services, using Amazon VPC, EC2, S3/EBS, Glacier and phased “assisted build” deployments to standardize processes and support rapid testing and scaling. The move delivered up to 30% savings in infrastructure costs, test environments in hours instead of weeks, 99.999% availability, better global accessibility, and freed funds for research (including genomics and satellite analytics), while ongoing AWS optimization and support continue to improve performance and scalability.
