A Amazon Web Services Case Study
International Games System (IGS) is a Taiwan‑based games developer founded in 1989 with more than 800 employees, known for arcade titles and a growing web and mobile gaming business. As demand for online and mobile games expanded globally, IGS found its on‑premises servers in Hong Kong and Shanghai costly, labor‑intensive, and slow to scale, which impeded development speed and the company’s ability to respond to spikes in player traffic.
In 2012 IGS migrated new game development to Amazon Web Services, using EC2, Elastic Load Balancing, CloudFront, and RDS across Asia‑Pacific regions to quickly spin up development and production environments. The move cut development time by about 50%, supported spikes of 10,000 new players per day for weeks, reduced provisioning from four hours to 30 minutes, enabled a single engineer to manage ~300 servers versus on‑premises teams for a few machines, and delivered 99.999% uptime.
