A Amazon Web Services Case Study
SingTel Digital Media, operator of InSing.com and HungryGoWhere.com, is Singapore’s leading lifestyle and dining portal serving the majority of the country’s web visitors. Rapid growth left the company running nearly 100 co-located servers, incurring high procurement and upgrade costs, large lump-sum warranty renewals and long hardware lead times (up to three months) that blocked fast product launches and immediate capacity needs for new projects.
SingTel migrated InSing.com to AWS (starting with a prototype in 2011 and full migration in 2012), replatforming to an open-source stack on Amazon EC2 with Elastic Load Balancing, S3 and Route 53. The move reduced infrastructure procurement as a bottleneck (instances can be provisioned in minutes), cut average page load times by 47% (from 15.7s to 8.3s), consistently exceeded the 98% uptime SLA, and comfortably supports high traffic (InSing ~6.2M and HungryGoWhere ~7.9M page views/month and 40% event spikes) while lowering costs.
