A Amazon Web Services Case Study
InhibOx develops Scopius, the world’s largest virtual library of modeled drug candidates and provides custom database builds and contract drug-discovery services to biotech, pharma, and agrochemical clients. Their business requires virtually unlimited, on‑demand computing and very high data security, so the company sought an infrastructure that could scale to massive compute workloads while cutting the high costs of maintaining in‑house hardware.
InhibOx moved core workloads to AWS, using Amazon EC2 (including Spot Instances) and S3, benchmarking cc2.8xlarge instances and building clusters with tools like StarCluster, S3tools, CloudWatch and AWS Import/Export. A four‑day run across 64 cc2.8xlarge instances delivered significant cost savings (an equivalent in‑house setup would have cost roughly $192K plus overhead), faster cluster deployment, supercomputer-scale performance for a fraction of the price, and the security and reliability that transformed their business.
