A Amazon Web Services Case Study
Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS), home of the Indianapolis 500, hosts millions of fans and three major motorsport events and built online platforms to stream live races to more than 3.1 million visitors. Facing huge, unpredictable traffic spikes and the operational burden of a 50-server farm managed through an ISP, IMS needed a more scalable, cost-effective way to deliver live video, timing, and scoring to a global audience.
IMS migrated hosting and live-streaming to Amazon Web Services, using Amazon EC2 to mirror sites and scale capacity during events and Amazon S3 to archive 100,000 high-resolution images. The move cut event costs (over 50% savings during the Indy 500), reduced on-site staffing needs, accelerated development and testing of new applications, and let IMS bring live services to market in weeks rather than months.
