How uMotif drives medical research using AWS, boosting quality of data from clinical trials

uMotif is a health-technology company that builds mobile tools to improve patient data capture for clinical studies. Facing poor-quality, paper-based diaries and the need to scale and meet healthcare compliance, uMotif set out to make it easy for patients to record symptoms on phones and tablets while ensuring secure, auditable data handling.

uMotif built a cloud backend on AWS—using services such as Amazon VPC, IAM, RDS, SNS, SES, Lambda, DynamoDB, EC2, and CloudWatch—to securely sync app data at scale. The system handled 5,000 sign-ups in the first week and 13,500 participants overall, capturing 38 million data points (including 5+ million pain records and 8.5+ million GPS points), cut operational costs by thousands of dollars a month, and enabled expansion into the US market.
