Case Study: Marqeta achieves scalable MySQL performance and multi-region availability with Amazon Web Services

A Amazon Web Services Case Study

Preview of the Marqeta Case Study

How Marqeta, a global issuer of modern cards, increased the performance and availability of MySQL databases using AWS

Marqeta, a modern card issuing and processing company, was scaling rapidly as it migrated from on-premises infrastructure to the cloud. As its customer base grew, its largest MySQL databases on Amazon Web Services—especially on Amazon RDS and on-premises systems—were approaching IOPS and storage limits, creating performance and availability challenges.

Amazon Web Services recommended Amazon EBS io2 Block Express volumes to meet Marqeta’s needs. After prototyping and benchmarking, Marqeta migrated its most critical MySQL databases to Amazon EBS, gaining up to 256K IOPS and 64TB of storage. The new setup improved high availability and gave Marqeta the runway to re-architect for scalability, including a multi-region architecture and monolith decomposition.
