How Holvi built its digital bank for entrepreneurs using AWS

Holvi is a Finland-based fintech that built a digital bank for entrepreneurs, small businesses, and freelancers, offering business accounts plus integrated invoicing, payments, and expense tools. Its challenge was to deliver a fast, secure, and scalable service while meeting strict regulatory and audit requirements to operate across the European Economic Area.

Holvi built its platform on AWS (VPC, EC2, RDS/PostgreSQL, ELB, CloudFront, Route 53, CloudWatch, S3), using a secure VPN to connect to payment processors and hosting in AWS’s Ireland region to keep data within the EEA. The result was millisecond‑scale payment authorizations, quicker product launches, smoother regulatory audits and approval, scalable growth, and eventual acquisition by a major European bank.
