Hess Corporation - Customer Case Study

Hess Corporation, a global independent energy company, needed to divest its downstream businesses in 2013 and deliver a fully operational, separable IT environment to potential buyers by January 2014. The challenge was to separate hundreds of servers, legacy Windows and database applications, and related data without redesigning applications or disrupting business operations.

Working with AWS and partner Nimbo, Hess replicated its on‑premises environment in the cloud—migrating about 300 servers using Amazon VPC, EC2/EBS, Direct Connect, S3/Glacier backups, multi‑AZ deployment and virtualization of existing appliances. The team built and cloned environments rapidly, met legacy compatibility needs, and completed production cutover in six months; the buyer received the environment in February 2014 after a 30‑minute handover, delivering speed, flexibility, disaster‑recovery options, and a streamlined transition.
