HERE Technologies Scales Up Binary-Artifact Repository Using Amazon EFS

HERE Technologies, a global leader in location services with 8,000 employees across 54 countries, needed to centralize and scale binary-artifact storage for hundreds of development projects. Their on-premises Artifactory/NFS setup required frequent hardware provisioning, was a single point of failure, and caused timeouts on 5–10% of uploads over 100 MB—slowing builds and releases.

HERE migrated Artifactory to AWS—running on EC2 and backed by Amazon EFS, with RDS, S3, CloudWatch, Direct Connect, and VPC—to provide scalable, shared storage and simpler administration. The change eliminated upload timeouts (now zero), boosted 1 GB transfer speeds by 38% (33% for on-prem uploads), centralized more than 1.2 million artifacts (20+ TB) with 750,000 downloads and 50,000 uploads per day, cut infrastructure setup from 12 weeks to 1 week, and reduced TCO while enabling cross-region disaster recovery.
