Health Guru is a New York City internet company that provides online health information videos, with a library of 3,500+ videos and over one billion cumulative streams. To power Healthguru.com and a video syndication platform that delivers customizable client-side widgets to partners, the company relied on local memcached tied to web servers; as traffic and syndication needs grew, adding servers to increase cache was only a short-term fix and didn’t meet scalability and performance demands.

Health Guru moved to Amazon ElastiCache (memcached) combined with Amazon Route 53, using ElastiCache to store complete client scripts keyed by URL for rapid delivery to partners. The deployment took under a week, reduced operations overhead by about 20 hours per week, and produced a 92.5% improvement in average response times; the team also benefited from easier deployment, CloudWatch metrics, and the service’s elasticity.
