Gruppo Editoriale l'Espresso - Customer Case Study

Gruppo Editoriale L'Espresso is an Italian multimedia group whose digital division supports national titles like la Repubblica and l'Espresso, 13 local newspapers, and three radio stations. Facing an on‑premises estate of more than 400 physical servers housed in a single data center, the team needed greater operational agility, resilience against a single point of failure, and the ability to absorb unpredictable traffic spikes—without disrupting service to readers.

The digital division migrated to AWS, running a multi‑Availability Zone architecture with more than 140 EC2 instances and Auto Scaling, plus ElastiCache, CodeDeploy, Route 53, RDS and Redshift (and exploring Lambda/API Gateway). The move shifted assets delivering about 70% of site traffic to the cloud with zero downtime, enabled automatic handling of traffic surges (up to ~300%), and freed the IT team to focus on developing new digital services.
