A Amazon Web Services Case Study
G+J Uitgevers is an Amsterdam-based publisher of magazines such as Vogue, Glamour, and National Geographic, whose sites receive millions of page views and can experience sudden traffic spikes of 200–400% (and in one case over 700%). Their previous multi-vendor hosting setup couldn’t handle peak loads, causing poor performance, outages, and the costly need to buy rarely used servers; with hosting contracts expiring, they needed a consolidated, flexible, and scalable solution.
Working with Webslice, G+J Uitgevers migrated to AWS, deploying EC2 instances, Elastic Load Balancing, EBS, S3 for static content, and centralized databases (with plans for RDS and CloudFront). The move enabled rapid horizontal scaling, reduced time to provision servers from weeks to minutes, cut overall hosting costs by about 20%, and allowed the company to absorb massive traffic spikes without downtime while continuing to optimize their AWS architecture.
