A Amazon Web Services Case Study
Geodata, a Norway-based provider of GIS software and services, needed a cost-effective, high-performance Windows-accessible storage solution to host millions of high-resolution aerial images for a new Esri-based mapping site. The company had to process more than 120 TB of raw imagery, store over 48 TB of compressed map tiles, and deliver consistent availability and fast map-data processing while scaling as usage and image volume grew.
Geodata built the norgeibilder.no backend on Amazon EC2 with Amazon EBS Cold HDD (sc1) volumes for large sequential I/O, using four 4 TB sc1 volumes for 48 TB of tiles, a gp2-backed write cache with Windows Storage Spaces, and Amazon S3 for a 125 TB archive. The deployment delivers ~500 MB/s read capacity, cut storage costs by about 70% and overall AWS monthly costs by ~40%, and provides the scalability and reliability needed to support millions of images and future growth.
