A Amazon Web Services Case Study
Galata Chemicals, a global PVC additives producer headquartered in Connecticut with manufacturing in the US and Germany, relies on an SAP ERP system for more than 80% of its business processes. After becoming independent in 2010, Galata sought to lower IT costs and improve operational efficiency: its tape-based backup and DR approach was cumbersome and expensive, and rebuilding a test DR environment could take up to four months, limiting formal testing to twice a year.
Working with Protera, Galata moved its SAP disaster recovery to AWS using Amazon EC2, Amazon VPC, EBS snapshots stored in S3 and a secure VPN connection. The “Pilot Light” architecture keeps a small, continuously synchronized SAP instance on AWS that can be scaled up in minutes, allowing DR tests in hours without disrupting production. The new solution cut operational complexity and RTO/RPO, enabled on‑demand testing, and reduced DR costs by an estimated 70%.
