FreeWheel Migrates Key Ad Tech Platforms to AWS, Delivering a Globally Scalable Cloud Transformation

FreeWheel, a global ad tech company, needed a more scalable and efficient way to run its growing data-processing, forecasting, and monitoring workloads as demand surged across major events and international markets. As part of its Cloud First initiative, FreeWheel worked with Amazon Web Services, using services such as Amazon EC2, Amazon EKS, Amazon Aurora, and AWS Lambda to move key platforms from on-premises infrastructure to the cloud.

With Amazon Web Services, FreeWheel built an elastic architecture that could scale in minutes instead of months, including spinning up thousands of ad servers for peak events like the FIFA World Cup and supporting Tokyo Olympic capacity in just 15 minutes. The migration also improved performance and cost efficiency: FreeWheel reported 300 ms or less latency, 10–20 ms network latency, and up to 20% compute cost savings by using AWS Graviton processors, while Savings Plans further helped lower cloud spending.
