A Amazon Web Services Case Study
Fon is a Madrid‑based WiFi company (founded 2006) that runs 20 million hotspots and provides a WiFi service management platform (WSMP) for telcos, enterprises, municipalities, and transport providers. As Fon expanded beyond traditional telecom customers it needed much faster, more scalable deployments, PCI‑DSS‑level security for cloud environments, and clearer cost visibility to price services accurately—tasks that were slow and complex with on‑premises installations.
Fon moved new WMSP customers and its roaming and BI workloads to AWS, using isolated VPCs, EC2 with Auto Scaling and Elastic Load Balancing, CloudFormation and CodeDeploy, Lambda, and an analytics stack (S3, RDS, Redshift, EMR, Kinesis). The result: environments that once took months can now be provisioned in hours (99% faster), fewer engineers are required, big‑data processing and analytics were launched quickly (enabling potential new revenue from anonymized data), security and PCI requirements are maintained, and Fon now has clear, per‑customer cost insights.
