EyeEm - Customer Case Study

EyeEm is a Berlin-based start-up that offers a mobile photo app and community for sharing images. Facing rapid user growth and frequent traffic spikes, the team needed to avoid the cost and overhead of hiring extra sysadmins while ensuring fast, reliable scaling and uptime.

EyeEm migrated its stack to AWS, using EC2 with Auto Scaling and Elastic Load Balancing, SQS, S3/Glacier, ElastiCache, CloudFront, Route 53 and CloudFormation to handle web, API and image-processing workloads. The result: API response times improved (cache halved read load), capacity grew from about 3 to ~15 instances, usage increased tenfold year‑over‑year, and EyeEm can now absorb traffic spikes 30–50× above normal demand.
