Expedia Increases Agility and Resiliency by Going All In on AWS

Expedia, a leading online travel company operating Expedia.com and about 200 global sites, faced a challenge delivering fast, reliable experiences from its on‑premises data centers—especially for latency‑sensitive services like its Expedia Suggest Service (ESS). To support continuous innovation, global scale, and better proximity to customers, the company committed to migrating the majority of its mission‑critical applications to the cloud, planning to move about 80 percent to AWS within two to three years.

By going all in on AWS, Expedia built and launched ESS in months and replicated services across regions, cutting average network latency from 700 ms to under 50 ms. Using Amazon EC2, S3, EMR, Auto Scaling, CloudFormation, IAM/STS federation, and a multi‑region/multi‑AZ architecture with blue‑green deployments, Expedia increased resiliency and CPU efficiency (around 230%), reduced deployment and troubleshooting times dramatically (identifying issues in two days versus six weeks), and saved the company millions while enabling faster innovation.
