Expedia Group Speeds Up Vendor Payment Transactions from 1 Day to Seconds

Expedia Group needed to modernize its accounts payable reconciliation and vendor payment processes as transaction volumes grew, since its legacy SQL Server-based system was slowing down, requiring manual intervention, and creating vendor lock-in. Using Amazon Web Services, including Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL, Expedia sought a cloud-based, scalable alternative that could support its global travel platform and handle sudden traffic spikes more efficiently.

Amazon Web Services helped Expedia Group migrate the system in phases to a microservices-based architecture on AWS, using services like Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL, Amazon SQS, Amazon S3, Amazon Elasticsearch Service, and Amazon Kinesis Data Streams. The result was a faster, more flexible payment platform that reduced database costs, eliminated vendor lock-in, and delivered data in seconds instead of more than a day, with top-99th percentile performance of 2.6 seconds and the ability to sustain 200 transactions per second during a large backfill.
