A Amazon Web Services Case Study
eWATER is a London-based startup that builds low-cost, IoT-enabled tap systems to give people in developing countries reliable access to clean water. Confronting the widespread problem of broken water infrastructure and lack of funds for ongoing maintenance, the company designed tamper-proof devices, NFC payment tags and a mobile app to collect small, pre-paid water fees and transmit usage and status data — but they needed secure, reliable M2M connectivity and scalable cloud processing to make the system work at scale.
Working with Eseye and on the AWS Cloud, eWATER deployed solar-powered IoT pumps with Eseye AnyNet Secure SIMs, NFC payment tags and an eWATERcare cloud platform to monitor flow, sales and faults in real time; local maintenance franchises handle repairs. The pilot in Gambia and Tanzania delivered 24/7 clean water to about 13,000 people, provided secure, highly available connectivity and pay-as-you-go scalability, and the company projects the solution could reach up to 10 million people through 100,000 taps.
