Epic Games launches RealityScan app on AWS; announces 2M MetaHumans milestone at re:Invent

Epic Games, the interactive entertainment company behind Unreal Engine, needed a way to make photorealistic 3D creation more accessible and scalable. With AWS, Epic launched RealityScan, a smartphone app that turns photos into digital models, and supports tools like MetaHuman Creator for creators working in simulation, architecture, automotive, and film/TV.

Amazon Web Services implemented a cloud-based solution using services such as EC2 GPU instances, RDS, S3, CloudFront, and ElastiCache to process image data in real time and store millions of assets. The result was a highly scalable platform supporting tens of thousands of creators, tens of thousands of finalized models, and millions of photos processed in beta; Epic also announced that 2 million MetaHumans had been created, with creation time reduced from months to less than an hour.
