DNAnexus - Customer Case Study

DNAnexus, a Mountain View–based company, built an API-driven platform to manage, share, and analyze genomic data for enterprises and clinical researchers. Rapid advances in next-generation sequencing created massive volumes of raw data and outpaced many institutions’ compute and storage capacity, while global studies required secure, compliant collaboration and reproducible pipelines—challenges DNAnexus addressed by developing a cloud-based genome informatics and data-management platform.

DNAnexus selected AWS—using Amazon EC2, S3, Glacier and a Business Associate Agreement—to deliver scale, performance, security, and compliance. Running on AWS, DNAnexus supports over 56,000 simultaneous cores, multiple petabytes of storage and tens of millions of core-hours, offers GUI and CLI uploads from sequencers, a robust queuing system, flexible pricing (including Spot and Reserved Instances) and minute-level billing, and enables clinically compliant, large-scale genomic research under standards such as HIPAA, ISO, and SOC.
