Discover Financial Services Increases Transaction Processing Speed by 66% on AWS

Discover Financial Services, which provides banking, credit, and payments services through the Discover Global Network, needed to modernize its settlement processing. Its aging mainframe environment supported only Discover Network, created staffing challenges, and slowed the company’s ability to make frequent pricing changes and expand to PULSE and Diners Club International. Discover also wanted to add multicurrency capabilities and improve speed to market, so it turned to Amazon Web Services.

Amazon Web Services helped Discover build and migrate its pricing and settlement solution to AWS, using services including Amazon S3, AWS Direct Connect, and Amazon RDS for MariaDB. The first phase moved the Discover Network pricing engine to AWS, and Discover also added a multicurrency capability for new partners. As a result, the pricing engine went live on AWS in June 2021 after an 18-month implementation, and Discover increased transaction processing speed by 66% while gaining greater agility and scalability.
