DeviceScape - Customer Case Study

Devicescape provides telecom operators a Device Service Platform that blends cellular and Wi‑Fi connectivity using a Curated Virtual Network (CVN) of more than 20 million “known good” hotspots (from 315 million monitored) and software on tens of millions of devices. As demand for high‑quality Wi‑Fi grew, Devicescape needed a secure, always‑on, and highly scalable infrastructure to serve large operators, enable rapid experimentation without long hardware leases, and solve MySQL scalability and operational pain points.

Devicescape migrated to AWS—running servers on Amazon EC2 across multiple Availability Zones with Auto Scaling, Elastic Load Balancing, S3, and EMR (Spot Instances), and replacing MySQL with managed Amazon DynamoDB—to gain scalability, disaster recovery, and security via IAM and security groups. The move lowered operational overhead (about 10% maintenance savings after migrating to DynamoDB), enabled fast trials for customers, supported modular cloud adoption, and reduced costs further through Spot/Reserved instances while the company explores Kinesis and broader DynamoDB migrations.
