Democratize Access to HPC for Computer-Aided Materials Design Using Amazon EC2 Spot Instances with Good Chemistry

Good Chemistry used Amazon Web Services to overcome the high cost and limited access of traditional high-performance computing for computer-aided materials design. With its QEMIST Cloud platform, the company needed a way to run high-throughput, high-accuracy chemistry simulations at massive scale while maintaining availability and flexibility.

Amazon Web Services, using Amazon EC2 Spot Instances along with Amazon EKS, Karpenter, and Amazon Aurora, enabled Good Chemistry to dynamically scale HPC workloads across multiple Availability Zones and reach more than one million cores. This helped Good Chemistry complete a bond-breaking energy simulation for PFOA in 37 hours, with only 4 hours at peak scale; sequential execution would have taken several years, dramatically accelerating discovery and democratizing access to supercomputer-level resources.
