Deltek, a Herndon, VA–based provider of enterprise software for government contractors and project-based businesses, faced rising Microsoft licensing costs and excessive time spent managing on-premises application environments as it grew through mergers and acquisitions. The company needed to scale globally, accelerate innovation, and maintain strict compliance (SOC 1 & 2, FedRAMP, ITAR) while controlling Windows Server and SQL Server licensing expenses.

Deltek migrated key applications to AWS—using Amazon EC2, RDS, S3, and KMS—and adopted EC2 Dedicated Instances and Dedicated Hosts to bring its own licenses (BYOL). That approach enabled license optimization and compliance controls, delivering a 15% reduction in SQL licensing costs, an expected 10% saving on Windows licensing, hundreds of thousands of dollars in annual savings, plus improved global scalability, agility, and regulatory confidence.
