Delivering Engaging Games at Scale Using AWS with Whatwapp

Whatwapp, a developer of social multiplayer games, needed a more standardized and scalable backend to support its live titles and large player base without disrupting ongoing games. By migrating its backend operations to Nakama on Amazon EKS with Amazon Web Services, the company aimed to improve matchmaking, authentication, chat, and other real-time game features while keeping existing code and live services running smoothly.

Amazon Web Services helped Whatwapp implement a flexible gaming infrastructure that supports up to 40,000 simultaneous players and uses Amazon S3, Amazon Kinesis Data Streams, and Amazon CloudFront for storage, data ingestion, and content delivery. The result was greater visibility into bottlenecks, faster updates, and feature sharing across games in about one-third the previous time, helping improve user experience, retention, and even attract new DevOps talent.
