A Amazon Web Services Case Study
Dash is a connected-car platform that plugs into vehicles made after 1996 and pairs with iPhone and Android apps to deliver real-time diagnostics, fuel- and cost-saving alerts, and location-based offers. Launched in 2014 and used by over 150,000 drivers across the US, Canada, and Europe, Dash needed a cloud platform that could scale, process rapidly changing streaming data with low latency, and let the small team iterate quickly without large upfront capital expenditures.
Dash built its stack on AWS—using Amazon Kinesis for 1–4 second vehicle data ingestion (>1 TB/day), DynamoDB for storage, EC2 for app servers, ElastiCache, S3, ELB, Route 53, and CloudWatch—so it can refresh vehicle context multiple times per minute and analyze billions of events. The result: faster time-to-market, simplified real-time infrastructure, reduced development overhead, scalable operations without heavy capital, and better customer experiences through timely diagnostics and savings offers.
