A Amazon Web Services Case Study
Daily Voice, a local digital news leader covering 43 cities in Connecticut and New York, needed a more scalable way to run its micro-community news sites as traffic grew and its on-premises-style VPS setup became hard to maintain. Prior to Amazon Web Services, the company was managing MySQL databases and redundancy itself, and an overworked system administrator made the model difficult to scale.
Daily Voice moved to Amazon Web Services and, with help from Apparatus Infrastructure Services, migrated and managed its environment on AWS using services like Amazon EC2, Amazon RDS for MySQL, Amazon S3, Amazon CloudFront, Auto Scaling, and Amazon SES. Amazon Web Services helped the company scale traffic smoothly, including major spikes, while reducing infrastructure costs by almost half through Reserved Instances and saving more than $15,000 annually; CloudFront alone was estimated to cut resource needs by five to six times for serving content.
