A Amazon Web Services Case Study
CyberAgent operates FRESH!, one of Japan’s leading streaming platforms with about 1,400 channels and 37,000 programs. Its microservice stack uses Amazon Aurora for write-heavy services, MySQL on Amazon RDS for other APIs, and CloudFront/API Gateway fronting those APIs, with background workers on Amazon SQS. The company decided to containerize all FRESH! microservices using Docker, but most engineers had only local Docker/Docker Compose experience and there was no internal track record for running production-scale container management.
CyberAgent adopted Amazon EC2 Container Service (ECS), evaluated it quickly after it launched in the Tokyo region, and stood up a development environment in weeks. The team built a custom ecs-formation tool and used CircleCI to deploy Docker Compose apps to ECS; within two months they were ready for full-scale operations with automatic task scaling. ECS removed the need to run cluster-management software, improved environment consistency, leveraged the Task Definition “essential” parameter for greater stability, and helped CyberAgent achieve over 99.9% service availability.
