CSIRO Prepares for the Era of “Mega-Biobank” Analytics on AWS

CSIRO, Australia’s national scientific research agency, needed a way to analyze rapidly growing genomic and biobank datasets without overwhelming traditional bioinformatics systems. Working with Amazon Web Services, CSIRO looked for a scalable, secure cloud approach that could keep analysis close to the data while supporting future growth in population-scale genomics.

Amazon Web Services helped CSIRO build VariantSpark on AWS using services including Amazon EMR, Amazon EC2, Amazon S3, and AWS KMS, and later developed the serverless sBeacon on AWS Lambda for global genomic data exchange. The result was faster, more secure analysis, with VariantSpark running 3.6x faster than legacy big data solutions and scaling linearly for massive future datasets, while sBeacon reduced costs and enabled researchers to share data without consolidating it into one huge database.
