Convoy Leverages Machine Learning to Help Shipping Industry Reduce CO2 Emissions

Convoy, a digital freight network based in Seattle, uses machine learning on Amazon Web Services to tackle a major shipping-industry challenge: reducing empty truck miles and the associated CO2 emissions. With millions of drivers traveling billions of miles each year, empty trips account for a significant amount of waste and carbon output.

Amazon Web Services helped Convoy implement Amazon SageMaker for machine learning to match shippers with drivers more efficiently and bundle shipments into “automated reloads.” This increased full-truck travel to over 80% of the time for participating drivers, and Convoy estimates the same efficiency gains across the industry could cut CO2 emissions by 32 million metric tons annually.
