Centrica - Customer Case Study

Centrica Connected Home, part of Centrica/British Gas, develops the Hive smart‑home ecosystem (heating, lights, plugs and sensors) used by hundreds of thousands of UK customers. After acquiring platform partner AlertMe in 2015, the team faced rapid scaling and integration challenges: they needed to unify engineering teams, support new products and international launches, maintain stability and availability, and expand into new services such as Alexa integrations.

They migrated the Hive platform onto AWS — keeping Amazon EC2, RDS and S3 while adopting AWS IoT, Lambda‑based microservices, API Gateway, Cognito, CloudFront and managed analytics tools — to gain lower latency, greater resilience and easier scaling. The result is a lean, agile infrastructure that speeds feature delivery, reduces operational overhead through managed services, supports cost‑effective pay‑as‑you‑go experimentation, and gives engineering teams the freedom to innovate with confidence in reliability.
