Butterfly Network Brings Medical Imaging to More People in More Places Using AWS

Butterfly Network developed the Butterfly iQ, an affordable handheld whole-body ultrasound that aims to make medical imaging universally accessible. To scale its cloud-based imaging, analytics, and AI features—and to meet strict HIPAA requirements—the company needed reliable, high-performance storage and compute for large-scale deep-learning workloads and secure, shareable image management.

Butterfly built its Butterfly Cloud on AWS (Amazon EC2, S3, RDS, EFS, and HPC tooling), gaining massively parallel, low-latency storage, scalable compute, and HIPAA-eligible services. The move cut cluster failures and downtime, sped regulatory compliance, and let data scientists focus on models that enable AI-guided imaging and global collaboration—helping the company deliver smarter, more widely available ultrasound care.
