Building a Development Platform to Support Secure Application Deployment Using Backstage and AWS with Toyota Motor North America

Toyota Motor Corporation’s Advanced R&D and Engineering Company faced a challenge as different departments built separate Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) systems for their own needs, creating fragmentation, limited usability, and dependence on specialists. To support broader, secure use of generative AI, Toyota turned to Amazon Web Services and its AWS cloud platform to build a shared RAG infrastructure.

Amazon Web Services implemented the shared infrastructure and integrated it with Toyota’s in-house authentication system to centrally manage file access control and authentication across departments. In the Automotive Design Information Management Department, the solution is projected to reduce research time by about 20% and research effort by 50%, while enabling more secure collaboration and easier access for employees without technical expertise.
