A Amazon Web Services Case Study
Browan Communications, a Taiwan-based subsidiary of Gemtek founded in 2002, sells wireless broadband products worldwide and employs about 130 staff for R&D, sales and marketing. The company needed to rapidly expand FreePP — its mobile VoIP and messaging app — and launch new IPCam and home-automation services, but its co-located data-center setup required buying 35 new servers, which was costly and couldn’t scale to meet product and time-to-market goals.
Browan migrated FreePP to AWS, using EC2, VPC, Auto Scaling, Elastic Load Balancing, CloudFront, Route 53, RDS (multi-AZ), ElastiCache, CloudWatch and lightweight MQTT/MEC components, with regional relays and PSTN connectivity. The move let Browan shut down 24 colo servers and avoid a $140,000 hardware purchase, spin up capacity in minutes, cut product time-to-market by eight weeks, improve scalability and user experience, and begin developing IPCam and home-automation services on AWS with ongoing support.
