BioNTech Accelerates Data Processing for Proteomics Workflows by 500x Using AWS

BioNTech, a life sciences company working on proteomics and therapeutic research, needed a faster way to move large mass spectrometry datasets from instrument computers to the cloud and run Spectrum Mill searches at scale. Working with Amazon Web Services, BioNTech set out to simplify data handling and speed up analysis across its research workflows.

Amazon Web Services implemented an end-to-end cloud workflow using AWS Storage Gateway, Amazon S3, Amazon EC2, EC2 Auto Scaling, SQS, API Gateway, and Redshift. The result was 50–75% faster individual search times, lower compute costs with EC2 Spot Instances, and up to 500x faster data processing by running hundreds of instances in parallel.
