Biblioteca de Catalunya is the Catalan national library in Barcelona responsible for collecting, preserving, and providing access to Catalan bibliographic heritage. Facing the need to preserve digitized and born-digital materials, host public-domain documents online, and store 26 TB with 1 TB/month growth while supporting long-term backups and anytime access, the library found its initial on‑premises remote‑replication backup solution too costly.

The library migrated to a hybrid AWS architecture using Amazon Glacier for secure, durable, low‑cost archiving and CloudBerry Backup to manage cloud files as if local, with plans to integrate Glacier with Amazon S3 for easier internet distribution of selected items. This approach cut backup costs by four times compared with the previous solution, provides reliable long‑term preservation, and offers flexible retrieval options from minutes to hours.
