A Amazon Web Services Case Study
Better Generation, founded in 2006, builds the Power Predictor sensor and online service that analyzes wind and solar data to generate financial and environmental site assessments for prospective microgeneration customers. As a small company with unpredictable, weather-driven traffic, it needed a low-cost, rapidly deployable infrastructure that could scale up or down quickly without large upfront investment.
Better Generation moved its application and services onto AWS—running its core app on Amazon EC2 (On‑Demand and Spot instances), staging on EC2 Small, storing data in Amazon S3 with Multi‑AZ Amazon RDS for redundancy, using Amazon SES for emails and CloudFront for video delivery. The pay‑as‑you‑go, scalable architecture reduced start‑up costs, improved flexibility and reliability, and enabled the company to expand its reach across the UK and beyond.
