Battle Camp - Customer Case Study

PennyPop, founded in 2011 by Charles Ju and Gordon Su, built and launched Battle Camp, a real-time, synchronous MMORPG with chat features that became a top-100 grossing app in over 40 countries. The small developer team needed to deliver a massive online game that could quickly scale if popularity surged while keeping operating costs and staff levels low.

PennyPop deployed Battle Camp on AWS using Amazon S3, EC2, SQS, and Amazon DynamoDB for all player and game data. This architecture enabled multi-region global deployment and effortless scaling from a few requests per minute to over 80,000 requests per second, while cutting infrastructure costs by at least 50% annually and avoiding the need to double operations staff.
