Bandera Electric Cooperative Develops Smart Energy Analytics Solution Using AWS IoT

Bandera Electric Cooperative needed an affordable, scalable way to organize and restructure smart meter data, improve transmission, and support near-real-time energy insights for members. Using Amazon Web Services, including Amazon EC2, Amazon Redshift, and AWS IoT capabilities, the cooperative built its Apolloware smart energy analytics solution to better manage grid data and customer usage information.

Amazon Web Services implemented a serverless and cloud-based architecture using Amazon Kinesis Data Streams, Amazon EMR, and AWS IoT Events to ingest, process, and analyze meter data in near real time. The result was improved grid reliability, outage detection, and member communication, while helping users reduce energy consumption by an average of 12 percent; more than 150 members also made home upgrades that cut monthly bills by over 20 percent.
