Australian Unity Improves Clinical Outcomes with “Internet of Knees” Using AWS IoT

Australian Unity, through its subsidiary Remedy Healthcare, needed a better way to improve patient compliance and recovery for at-home knee rehabilitation, especially as COVID-19 made in-home visits harder. After testing other vendors, the company turned to **Amazon Web Services** and used **AWS IoT Core** to build a mobile-based “Internet of Knees” solution that could track rehab exercises remotely.

**Amazon Web Services** helped Australian Unity connect Bluetooth sensors and a mobile app to the cloud, stream data with Amazon Data Firehose, and store it in Amazon RDS for therapist review. The solution was built two to three times faster than an on-premises approach, and patients reported nearly 100% motivation to exercise and 86% confidence in their technique; Australian Unity also expects to double patient capacity without adding staff and recoup development costs in about 18 months.
