Atlassian Scales to Millions of Databases Using Amazon RDS and Amazon Aurora

Atlassian needed a way to manage rapidly growing cloud database workloads while keeping operations simple, secure, and cost-effective. Using Amazon Web Services services such as Amazon RDS, Atlassian optimized its database infrastructure and adopted reserved instances to support growth, while preparing to move larger tenants to a more scalable platform.

Amazon Web Services helped Atlassian implement Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL-Compatible Edition for larger tenants and continue using Amazon RDS for smaller ones, with automation, Multi-AZ deployments, read replicas, CloudWatch, KMS, and Performance Insights improving availability, compliance, monitoring, and cost control. As a result, Atlassian scaled its cloud tenants from 5,000 to 25,000 users and now manages more than 2.8 million databases, with significant savings and better operational efficiency.
